Wie die englischsprachigen Kollegen von Polygon berichten, werden die Testberichte von Mafia 3 erst nach dem offiziellen Release des Actionspiels am 7. Oktober 2016 an die Öffentlichkeit gelangen. Demnach hält der Publisher 2K Games Rezessionsmuster von Mafia 3 zurück, was wiederum nicht heißen muss, dass der Titel gravierende, qualitative Defizite mit sich bringt. Bereits bei dem Shooter Doom von Bethesda Softworks und Destiny von Activision verhielt es sich ebenso, dass die Reviews erst kurz nach dem jeweiligen Release veröffentlicht wurden. Beide genannten Titel kamen bei der Fachpresse sehr gut an.
